History and InformationThe 63 Car Club is the organising
club behind the Speyside Stages. The club was set up in 1963 by a group
of mechanics that wanted to organise Motorsport in the Moray and North
East of Scotland. The club has built up over the years and now organises
a 9 round autotest championship and a 5 round road rally championship as
well as the Speyside Stages
These events
are held on Public Roads and are run at night to minimise the
inconvenience to the public. Here it is the skill of the driver and
navigator working as a team that is most important, perhaps with the
emphasis on the navigator’s skill. The navigator’s job is to
decipher the information given out in clues and then plot a route on the
1:50000 Ordnance Survey map, and instruct the driver as to which roads
to take to get them to a set point by a set time. Again a standard road
car is suitable for these events in which speed is not of the essence.
These events are timed at 30mph, which gives the driver ample time to
reach the control point without breaking the speed limit. It was events
such as these that 1995 World Champion Colin McRae began his motorsport,
first in the navigators seat before switching sides, the rest as they
say is history. To help encourage newcomers into this sport there is a
special class for novices where an experienced driver can accompany a
beginner in the left hand seat. Again the cost of entering these events
is low, around £25 per event and the Club run five of these events
throughout the year. The club is a member of the North
East Motor Sport Group and the East of Scotland Association of Car Clubs
with some of the above events counting towards their championships. The
club does far more than just organise Motorsport events though. The club
has marshals at events throughout Scotland and beyond. It also organises
various social outings, with trips to the ten-pin bowling, a golf outing
and numerous club nights. The club also organises trips abroad, which in
recent years has seen it visit World Rally Championship rounds in Spain,
France and Cyprus.
