Introduction to AutotestingThis is one of the cheapest forms of motorsport that the club organises. There are normally nine events per year, eight on tarmac and one on grass/stubble. In this event it is the skill of the driver which is put to the test as you perform a series of tests around cones against the clock. In autotesting it isn't the power of the car that matters, in fact a smaller car such as a Mini often proves to be the winner. You can take part in these events in almost any type of vehicle as you are placed in a class with cars of similar power. There is also a class for cars which aren't MoT'd or taxed, allowing nearly any vehicle, regardless of condition, to compete. The 63 Car Club also runs the economy class, which is open to cars with an engine capacity of 1400cc or less, and not requiring MOT or tax. This makes it possible to compete on a shoestring, with entry fees being around £12 per event. Very little modifications are required, so its possible to use your road car with very little risk of mechanical damage. Introduction to Road RallyingThese events are held on Public Roads and are run at night to minimize inconvenience to the public. Here it is the skill of the driver and navigator working as a team which is most important, perhaps with the emphasis on the navigator's skill. The navigator's job is to decipher a set of clues and then plot a route on an 1:50,000 Ordnance Survey map and instruct the driver as to which roads to take to get them to a set point by a set time. A standard road car is suitable for these events in which speed is not of the essence. These events are timed at 30mph which gives the driver ample time to reach the next control point without breaking the speed limit. To help encourage newcomers into the sport there is a class for novices where an experienced driver can accompany a beginner in the left hand seat. The cost of entering these events is low, around £25 per event of which there are normally five throughout the year. |
